Pathology
Also Known As:
A Peritoneal Fluid Examination analyzes fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity (abdomen).
The procedure to withdraw fluid is called paracentesis. This test helps identify the cause of ascites and detect infections (like Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis – SBP), malignancy, liver disease complications, TB, etc. The fluid is interpreted by analysing cell count , sugar & protein level, type of cells, presence of coagulum & bacteriological status. Comment is also made on presence of malignant cells, mesothelial cells and macrophages. Protein level helps to divide the fluid into exudates and transudate. If sugar levels are reduced, acute inflammation is suspected.Report is interpreted as malignan/suspicious/inflammatory/ transudate/Negative for malignancy. Advisory services are provided wherever required.
